Should you keep the pacifier during an intervention?

Our almost 5 mo. old girl falls asleep with her binky. When sleep training, should we eliminate the binky as well? It seems cruel to do both at the same time and the AAP does recommend pacifier use when falling asleep but I believe Ferber says to do away with it.

If you keep the paci and she needs it to sleep, then she will need you to replace it for her, because she probably won’t be able to replace it herself (usually not until around 7 months). Some parents choose to replace the paci until their babies can do it. Other parents ditch it during a sleep intervention. There isn’t a perfect answer, because the AAP does recommend paci use while falling asleep, but it IS a sleep association. Ultimately you should decide which makes the most sense for your situation. Take care!
